d'Hoppers Dance 'Camp'

The dance 'camp' was held over the weekend straight away after exams on 8 and 9 Dec'07.

DAY 1 (8 Dec)

Much preparation was done before the start of the camp and the comm members gathered early and prepared. When it was time, participants started strolling in while the rest just mingled around.

Posing

With about 20 people, we started our Ice-breaker games. One was the 'Animal' game where everyone have their own dance moves and had to show our own moves and another person's move. The other game was 'Pass the moves' where dance steps were passed on from one to the next and the last one would compare with the original's and see how much difference they were.

All in all, it was an hour of laughters and entertainment and was followed by lunch.

Our first workshop was 'Hip Hop' by Candy. The warm-up seemed like a training for a marathon and the dance steps seemed fast and complicated enough for advanced dancers.

We are only beginners leh...

While our legs started to turn jelly, we still had to follow through her 8 eights of choreograph. Seems pretty long judging how our usual lessons only have about 4 counts of eights.

Anyway, here's a video of it.....

And a group photo with Candy...

We were all tired after the lesson but after 1 hour of rest, it was time for another class....

Some of the people present

This time, it was 'Lyrical Hip Hop' by Mornin. Lyrical Hip Hop is a bit different from the general hip hop in the sense that the dance follows closely to the lyrics of the song and expresses the feeling, emotions that the songs are making through dance moves. Usually, it is one move per word.

Indeed, when we thought Candy's class was quite fast already, Mornin's was even faster. Imagine squeezing 17 moves in 4 seconds.

Lyrical Hip Hop proved to be too difficult for us that many of us simply couldnt catch up and took a very long time just to master the first 5 counts of the choreograph.

After learning what seemed like 3129 moves to us, Mornin selected the best 3 to be filmed...

Too tired at the end

Then we had our delicious pizza dinner and watched a movie 'You've Got Served', and it was time to go home..

DAY 2 (9 Dec)

The day started with many of us having muscle aches, thanks to the 'torturous' classes previously. In our groups, we met early and were choreographing and practising our dance steps for the mini-competition happening right after today's class.

As for today's class, it was Zee's turn for 'Lyrical Jazz'. This was somewhat different from hip hop but provides us a new experience to dance. We had some quick learning of basic jazz moves which were similar to ballet - the turning and spinning, and not forgetting the gracious hand and foot movements.

Followed was choreographs and fortunately, they were slower and less taxing on our aching muscles. We were then separated into smaller groups and showcased our jazzy moments. Ha.

Next, we had just 2 hours to finalise our dance for the mini-competition. All 3 groups practised hard, memorised steps and danced over and over again to perfect it.

Group 1::Group 2
Group 3::The winning group and their prizes

With Zee as our judge, the eventual winner was Group 2 who showed some entertainment and injected a theme in their choreograph. Congrats to them and they have won a voucher and caps.

With that, it was the end of our 2-day camp, learning 3 different kinds of dances, tiring out, but best of all, enjoying ourselves.

It was a nice experience and good exposure for all certainly.
