Fieldtrips

As environmental engineering students, naturally we have to visit some of the plants in Singapore. Not the kind u will find in botanic gardens, but the industrial kind.

So last thursday (28 Sept'07), during the recess week somemore, we went to the Ulu Pandan Wastewater Reclamation Plant. It is really ulu indeed... ...

The entrance::The NeWater plant operated by Keppel and not PUB
Aeration Tanks::Some egg-shaped tanks that are huge and half-buried underground

A storm was brewing

And i saw something that reminds me of the big sphere in Epcot, Walt Disney World...

Unknown sphere in Ulu Pandan::The iconic structure in Epcot

So at the end, it was more of seeing how waster water is processed and such. And the entire NeWater plant only has less than 5 people which include 1 security.

And our parting gift was a bottle of NeWater bottled by Keppel Seghers....

Yesterday, it was another fieldtrip to the Tiger Brewery at an even more ulu location, Tuas.

The visit was more of looking at how beer is made through fermentation by yeasts and packaging. Didnt really see much of the brewing process though, and strictly no pictures allowed in it. But the highlight of the trip was probably the Beer Tasting session at the end......

Asia Pacific Breweries is what that brew Tiger::The 6 brands made by APB
What time is it?::The Tavern

The bar-like tavern, complete with snacks::The bartender?
My Tiger::Our second round of beers

The beer was unlimited and very fresh. Tiger has never tasted so good. And when we finished our mug of Tiger, we could ask for more beer of other brands that are also brewed at the brewery. So we chose different one and tried....

Cheers!

My verdict? Guinness tasted horrible among all!

And a few of us have turned red after the rounds of drinking.Ha.

And also, this reminded me that we went to Pulau Semakau on 6 May this year. Well, it happened just one day before i left Singapore, so didnt really talk about it. Ha.

Anyway, we were supposed to visit the Semakau Landfill where wastes are incinerated and buried. In addition, it was also a Inter-tidal Coastal Walk where we would walk on the sea bed, looking at coastal marine life. So we got to take a ferry to this offshore island at dawn. It felt like going overseas yah. And interestingly, pictures do look much nicer when we were 'oversea'......

The map of the island::Mainland Singapore in the distant sea
Walking along the deserted highway::The sky so blue it felt so heavy

Air pollution::Walking through the mosquitoes-infested forest
Peering on the retreated bed with soaked feet::Trudging with seaweeds

A potato??::A 'scallop' in disguise
Trying hard not to step on them::Sea Star

Well, it was a nice experience though, away from the mainland and immersed in the nature. And of course we got to see lots of marine life, our coral reefs....

And now, seems like we have seen solid waste treatment, water treatment and microbiology at work...

So what about our air???

Oh yah, we got lots of trees already.......

Hmmmm.
